The SDRF has (as of July 2007) Completed three of five main stages in developing the MRI:
- 1. The first stage was the construction of the MRI main building made up of meeting rooms and lab complex. (Completed 2006)
- 2. The second stage was the collection of breeding stock of lobsters and groupers and setting up the spawning ( egg laying system) system for the MRI. This system is comprised of a set of floating cages in which the brood stock for all varieties is kept. The system is located on Ao Yai Lagoon just off Koh Yao island. (Completed February 2007)
- 3. The third stage was the establishment of a hatchery for the eggs collected from the spawning system. The system is located next to the MRI main building on a flat concrete platform and is capable of hatching all of the eggs collected from the spawning system. (Completed June 2007)
- 4. The fourth stage of the MRI process is the nursery system for fry produced by the spawning and hatchery systems. This stage has just started. So far we have built a bridge between the land and the lagoon, and a road to access the land from the main road. We are currently building a fence around the land. The next step would be filling in the land. (To start early 2008)
- 5.The dissemination system which will be the transferring and transportation of lobster and grouper fry to development projects, environmental projects and buyers (marketing). This will be the final stage of the MRI. (To start June, 2008)
